In short: Conversational AI is technology that lets people talk or type to a computer in everyday language and get a useful reply. It combines speech recognition, language understanding and dialogue management to hold a back-and-forth exchange.
Table of Contents
How it works
- Understand. The system turns speech into text if needed, then works out what the person wants, known as their intent.
- Decide. It checks the conversation so far and any connected systems, such as an account record, to choose a response.
- Reply. It answers in text or a voice, asks for more detail, or passes the person to a human.
Where you’ll meet it
Siri, Alexa, Gemini Live and ChatGPT’s voice mode are conversational AI. So are the assistants in many banking apps and on airline phone lines.
What it means for your business
- Routine contacts can be self-service. Balance checks, order tracking and booking changes can run day and night without staff.
- Integration drives value. The assistant helps only if it can read and update your real systems, such as orders and accounts.
- Plan the handover. Decide which topics go straight to a person, and pass the conversation history across so customers don’t repeat themselves.
Watch out for
- Wrong answers carry your name. A Canadian tribunal has held a company to what its chatbot told a customer.
- Frustrated customers. Loops with no way to reach a human drive complaints.
Example
Bank of America. Bank of America launched its virtual assistant Erica in 2018. In August 2025 the bank said Erica had passed 3 billion client interactions and helped nearly 50 million users since launch, averaging more than 58 million interactions a month. The bank said clients had also received more than 1.7 billion personalised insights from Erica, which can book appointments with a banker.

Frequently asked questions
Do customers mind talking to conversational AI?
Many accept it for quick tasks such as tracking orders. Satisfaction falls when the system can’t solve the problem or blocks access to a person, so always offer an easy route to a human.
How long does it take to set up conversational AI?
A basic assistant on an existing platform can go live in weeks. Linking it safely to order, booking or account systems usually takes months, plus time for testing with real customers.
Can conversational AI work in several languages?
Yes. Most modern systems handle dozens of languages, though quality is best in English and other widely spoken languages. Test with real customer phrases in each language before launch.
