Also called: on-device AI · Last checked: 7 November 2026
In short: Edge AI is AI that runs on a device itself, such as a phone, laptop, camera or machine, instead of in a distant data centre. It works faster, keeps data local and can run without an internet connection.

How it works
- Shrink the model. Developers make a smaller version of a model so it fits on a device’s memory and chip.
- Use a local chip. Many new devices include a neural processing unit (NPU), a chip built to run AI tasks using little power.
- Process on the spot. The device handles the data where it is created and sends only results, if anything, to the cloud.
Where you’ll meet it
Apple Intelligence and Samsung’s Galaxy AI run some features on the phone. Microsoft Copilot+ PCs use a local chip for live captions and image tools. Some security and factory cameras spot people or faults on the device.
What it means for your business
- Sensitive data stays put. Running AI on your own devices helps keep customer or patient data off outside servers.
- Faster responses. Tasks such as checking products on a production line happen in milliseconds without waiting for the cloud.
- Plan device upgrades. When replacing laptops or phones, check whether they have an NPU for on-device AI features.
Watch out for
- Smaller models. On-device models are less capable than cloud ones, so complex tasks may still go to the cloud.
- Device management. Updating models across hundreds of devices takes planning and can leave some out of date.
Example
Qualcomm. In May 2024 Microsoft launched its Copilot+ PCs, a new class of Windows laptops that run AI features on the device. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips powered the first wave of more than 20 models, which went on sale on 18 June 2024. Qualcomm rated their built-in AI chip at 45 trillion operations per second.
Edge AI vs hyperscaler
| Edge AI | Hyperscaler | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | On your device | In large remote data centres |
| Strengths | Speed, privacy, works offline | Power for large models |
| Costs | Paid once in hardware | Paid by usage over time |
Frequently asked questions
Is edge AI more private than cloud AI?
Generally yes, because the data stays on the device. Check the settings, though, since some features still send requests to the cloud when the task is too large.
Which businesses benefit most from edge AI?
Firms with sensitive data, poor connections or a need for instant results. Healthcare, manufacturing, retail stores and field services are common users.
Can edge AI work without the internet?
Yes, for tasks the device can handle alone, such as transcription or spotting faults on a camera feed. Updates and larger requests still need a connection.
