In short: Training data is the collection of examples, such as text, images, sound or records, that an AI model learns from. Its size, quality and legal status shape how well the model works and what risks it carries.
Table of Contents
How it works
- Collection. Developers gather data from the web, licensed sources, books, code and company records.
- Cleaning. They remove duplicates, errors and harmful material, and ideally strip out personal details.
- Learning. The model studies the data and adjusts its parameters to match the patterns it finds.
Where you’ll meet it
ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude were trained on large amounts of public web text. Settings in many tools let you choose whether your chats are used to train future models.
What it means for your business
- Your data has value. Content, transcripts and records you hold can improve AI, and some firms now license theirs for money.
- Check training settings. Make sure staff use accounts that keep company data out of model training.
- Ask suppliers where their data came from. Licensed sources lower your legal risk if outputs are challenged.
Watch out for
- Inherited bias. Gaps or unfairness in the data show up in the model’s answers.
- Copyright and privacy claims. Training on scraped content has led to lawsuits and action by regulators.
Example
Reddit. In February 2024 Reddit and Google announced an expanded partnership giving Google access to Reddit’s Data API, a structured feed of its public posts and comments. Google said the feed gave it structured access to fresher content to show in its products and to train its AI models. Reuters, citing one person familiar with the deal, reported it was worth about $60 million a year.
Training data vs synthetic data
| Training data | Synthetic data | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Any data a model learns from | Data made by a computer rather than collected |
| Source | Real people, records and content | Generated by models or simulations |
| How they relate | The wider category | One kind of training data |
Frequently asked questions
Can AI providers train on my company’s data?
It depends on your plan. Business and enterprise plans usually exclude your data from training, while some free and personal plans use it unless you opt out.
How much training data does a model need?
Large language models learn from trillions of tokens. A narrow task, such as sorting support tickets, can work with a few thousand good, labelled examples.
Why does the quality of training data matter so much?
A model can only learn what its data shows. Errors, gaps and bias in the examples turn into errors, gaps and bias in its answers.
