Business Model Design – The Nine Components

In part 3 of this free course on business model innovation, I will cover more of the nine business model components.

Business Model Canvas Components

Let’s explore each component of the Business Model Canvas in depth:

1. Customer Segments

This is where you define who you’re creating value for.

Key points:

  • Choose specific customer groups to focus on
  • Create detailed customer personas
  • Validate your assumptions through customer interviews

Types of customer segments include:

  • Mass market
  • Niche market
  • Segmented (based on behavior, usage, etc.)
  • Multi-sided platforms (e.g., marketplaces)

Remember, B2B and B2C segments often require different approaches in marketing and sales.

2. Value Propositions

This is the heart of your business model. It’s what makes customers choose you over competitors. Key considerations:

  • What problem are you solving?
  • How do you stand out?
  • How are you different from competitors?

Your value proposition should be clear, outcome-focused, and stress the business value of your offering.

Here are some value proposition examples.
